This was accomplished through animatronics: The special effects team built realistic replicas of body parts that moved, were completely self-contained, and had motors controlled by joysticks.|By the end of the day, everyone on the set was struggling not to laugh and ruin a scene -– especially during Wallace Shawn's scenes, says costar Daryl Hannah. "People had a hard time keeping themselves quiet during Wally's takes. Everyone on the set imitated every line he said," she notes.
