The Elefant, German for 'elephant', was a heavy tank destroyer, the Jagdpanzer, employed by the German Wehrmacht's Panzerjger during World War II. Ninety-one were constructed in 1943, initially named 'Ferdinand' after its creator, Ferdinand Porsche, using abandoned Tiger I tank hulls. In early 1944, Ferdinands received updates and were renamed 'Elefant' in May. Their official designations were Panzerjger Tiger (P) and Sd.Kfz. 184. The Elefant's combat debut occurred at the Battle of Kursk, where eighty-nine were deployed, its largest use. It excelled at destroying Soviet T-34 tanks and 76.2 mm anti-tank guns from behind the lines, using its 88 mm Pak 43/2 L/71 at over 3 kilometers. Mine damage and mechanical failures were significant issues at Kursk. The Ferdinand's immense weight made towing challenging, requiring five linked Bergepanzer IVs. It lacked peripheral vision blocks and a secondary machine gun, leaving it vulnerable to infantry attacks. During Kursk's initial offensive phase, many knocked-out Ferdinands were rescued and repaired. However, as the Germans fell back defensively, damaged vehicles often had to be destroyed to prevent capture. Deployed at company level, sometimes in platoons, Elefants were accompanied by infantry or tanks for flank and rear protection. In attack, they were first-strike vehicles; in defense, they served as a mobile reserve to counter enemy tank assaults.
